Desmazierella acicola

The EMA's first Spring Foray was in northern Greece, based in the ancient and historic city of Thessaloniki. The meeting was organized by EMA Treasurer, Dr Stephanos Diamandis, with help from Dr Charikleia Perlerou, and was well attended, with Participants from 11 European countries (Germany, Greece, FYROM, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine). Conditions for foraying were excellent throughout and the sites visited were varied and interesting: see map below for locations of sites and information about them (please note the two afternoon sites of 28 April are so close together that you must zoom in with the map to distinguish them). The meeting began with a fascinating tour of the Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki, on the evening of 25 April, and this set the pattern for a meeting where science and culture were intimately intertwined. There was a visit to the Aristotle monument (26 April, late afternoon), a traditional Greek lunch with folk music (27 April), a wonderful foray dinner at Panteleimon, overlooking Platamonas Castle, beautifully floodlit, and finally a one-day visit to Vergina and the tomb of Philip of Macedon (29 April, morning) combined with a tour of the Dion archaeological site (29 April, afternoon). Many thanks to Stephanos and Charikleia, and their colleagues for wonderful hospitality during an unforgettable few days.

After the map below, each site visited is listed with a brief description and an account of the fungi found there. Where a person is listed as making an identification, the identification in question was of the fungus. The name of the person identifying each associated organism is stored in EMA foray records database, but not displayed here. Before supplying records to this database, please read how to send records of fungi to the EMA for its database. As the EMA Recorder receives collection and observation data from participants, the list of fungi for each site will be enlarged. For each scientific name, a hyperlink is provided to the Cybernome website, from which there is usually further access to IndexFungorum for fungal names. The Cybernome website may also provide a hyperlink to the Robigalia website providing information about other records of the same organism. Important. The Robigalia database is far from exhaustive: there may be no record of a particular organism from a particular location in the database, but that alone certainly does not indicate that it is a new discovery.
